In a wild end to the season Joe surged into first place overall! Steve’s second half charge also worked out well for him as he moved him into a tie with Rich for 2nd overall, and they will share the 2nd and 3rd place money.

No ties tonight…

For the first time in weeks it looks like the tie-breaker will lead to a clear cut winner today…

If Denver win (+8.5) then the tie-breaker is between Steve (45) and Adrian (44). If San Diego win (-8.5) then the tie-breaker is between Joe (49) and Dick (48).

However, the tie-breaker is based on the game between Washington and San Francisco that was already played this afternoon, with a combined total score of 51. So if Denver win then Steve wins and if SD wins then Joe takes the weekly cash.

It’s half-time now and it looks like SD is going to cover easily, so Joe probably has it in the bag. And Ed Hochili isn’t here to help Denver tonight either!!!

Updated Standings and Balances

With only one week to go in the regular season, it’s comign down to the wire. After a hard charge over the last few weeks by Steve, it’s looking like a 4 way race (between, Rich, Joe, Sean, and Steve) for the overall prizes. Steve has pretty well managed to lock up the 2nd half prize already, so that’s out of contention.

Good luck to everybody for the final week and for the remaining prize money! Have a safe and happy holiday season as well, and stay tuned for details about the Playoff Pool!

Week 16 Winner

It was a hard fight, but Rob and Jack managed to pull off a split for the penultimate week as they both had Green Bay to win, and 37 points in the tiebreaker. Unfortunately for Steve that means that he has lost another close week. He might take some solace from the fact that his strong showing this week shoudl be good enough to wrap up the 2nd half prize, and may even be enough to help him get into some of the overall money too!

This is the third time we’ve seen a weekly prize split this season because of multiple players choosing the same TB score. I’m not sure that’s ever happened before. Funny!

The weekly winner…

In another strange but true twist for our pool, we have already determined the weekly winner. And it’s a tie! Bob and Adrian (oops) Rich P. both have 10 points and Green Bay for the Monday nighter, AND they both have 48 points in the tie-breaker. Although this is quite strange on its own, but stranger yet because it’s the second time that it’s happened this season and I don’t remember it every happening before!

Congratulations to you both!

Don’t forget that it’s American Thanksgiving this week which means there are 3 football games on Thursday. Picks must be in prior to kickoff of the first game, which is at 12:30 PM EST.

Starting 3 for 6

In the MNF game between Buffalo and Cleveland last night Bills QB Trent Edwards started out 3 for 6. That’s 3 interceptions in his first 6 passing attempts. Ouch.

Those are pretty unbelievable numbers, but the game stats only get stranger from there. The Bills really don’t have anyone else to go with (unless you consider JP Losman to be a good option) and so they left Edwards in the game. He finished the night with 148 passing yards (averaging 5.7 yards per attempt), went 16-26 overall, and even rushed for a touchdown. This is actually better in most categories than Brady Quinn of Cleveland who had an abysmal 39% completion rate and only managed 185 yards on 36 pass attempts (5.1 yards per attempt).

Quinn managed to do just enough for Cleveland to a win a game that was eerily similar to several others that they found new and innovative ways to lose this season. In fact they would have lost this one too except for Buffalo kicker Ryan Lindell going “Wide Right” at the end of the game.

The only bright spot in the game was Cleveland kicker Phil Dawson who pretty much carried Cleveland on his backby making 5 of 5 field goal attempts!

I don’t care what anyone says, Cleveland is not a good team. And even though they won the game last night, they haven’t turned anything around on an awful season. They simply got a lucky win.

Buffalo isn’t very good either.

The unlikely tie…

It was a squeaker!

Although Rich made it interesting with his Cleveland pick, justice prevailed and I managed to hold on to win the week with the high score in a 3-way tiebreaker. Of course it shouldn’t have even come to that, but the previously mentioned officiating debacle in Pittsburgh yesterday forced the tie situation and gave Steve and Rich an opportunity to steal the week.

I heard an interview on ESPN radio tonight with a distinguished member of a gambling outfit based in Las Vegas who indicated that the blown call had resulted in a multi-million dollar swing in the betting. When pressed as to whether he meant 2 $MM or maybe more like 7 $MM, he responded that it was probably more like double that! Of course he had to have been smiling as he said it since the betting was predominantly for Pittsburgh, and therefore the officials saved his company a huge pile of cash!!

Rigged? You decide…

Bizarre

It was a crazy end to the SD at PIT game this afternoon as Troy Polamalu appeared to have created a turnover on the last play of the game. He retrieved the ball and ran it into the endzone for a touchdown; however, in the most bizarre ruling since the “Hochuli Incident” in week 2 (also involving SD, hmmm), the officiating crew ruled that there had been a forward pass and therefore the TD was not counted. PIT was already in the lead (11-10) and they won the game anyway, so everybody went home happy.

Except for anyone that had taken PIT (- 4.5) to win against the spread (full disclosure, that includes me!).

The “forward pass” was actually a flip pass behind the SD players back, and it is impossible to see how the officials ruled that it was a forward pass. There was even a booth review on the play and the ruling of a forward pass stood! See for yourself:

Of course I’m particularly peeved because if the TD had counted then I would have won the week outright already. As it is I needed WAS to beat DAL tonight, but now I have to win the tiebreaker on Monday night vs Steve. We both have BUF to win, so it comes down to the total score. He’s got 45, I’ve got 47…. Oh well, I guess that’s how it goes sometimes!

More Monday Night Excitement

It was a pretty wild Sunday with lots of pool members scoring big. Jack opened up a one point lead over three other players going into Monday night, setting up a potential tiebreaker situation. Jack has San Fran to win on Monday, while two of the followers have Arizona. Jack will win outright with a Niners win, but if the Cards win by 10 points or more then the following tie breaker scores come into play:

Jack – 38
Aaron – 45
Steve – 48

It actually happened…

In a very strange twist of fate, we actually ended up with a three-way tie for the first-half overall standings. Pittsburgh’s win over Washington last night resulted in Tino and Sean gaining the extra point to catch up to Rich. They will now split the $50 prize three ways as well!

The Pittsburgh win also sealed Julian’s win for the week.
